Winnie Dunn is an Occupational Therapist who has developed a system of understanding sensory styles. Her book Living Sensationally can be a big help in understanding the sensory needs of elders who have dementia.
Some people have sensory styles that are very demanding – the person may have navigated their life with these sensory needs in mind. Now that the person has dementia that task falls to the care providers who may not be aware of these special needs.
“Sensory seekers” need a lot of sensory input
“Sensory avoiders” need very little sensory input
“Sensory sensitives” are very particular about their sensory experiences
“Sensory bystanders” are pretty easy going
What sensory style are YOU?
What sensory style is the elder for whom you care?
Just like shoes…one size does not fit all!
